{Spiritual 5:}
“The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit." Proverbs 15:4
When my husband was younger, he overheard someone whom he dearly loved and trusted, call him “stupid”. Whether he heard it in the correct context or not, he heard his name and the word stupid in the same sentence. To this day he remembers that and often has to dispel that lie when faced with making decisions. And that was over 30 years ago.
Our words are powerful. I strongly believe they can either be a blessing or a curse. And I even teach this to my students. We do not put each other down, because at our lowest point the devil will use that to try and convince us those lies are really true. It only takes one degrading word to make us feel completely worthless. And sometimes those negative voices come from the person we are closest to - ourselves. Proverbs 11:17 says “Your own soul is nourished when you are kind, but you destroy yourself when you are cruel.” Negative self talk is very dangerous. We can convince ourselves of just about anything. We think it. We start to believe it. And then we can’t remember the truth about ourselves anymore...until Someone reminds us.
A few years ago I was very overweight and always felt like that’s what people saw - just a fat woman. One day, walking out of a Starbucks and just knowing that people were disgusted by me, a complete stranger stopped me and said, “You have a beautiful smile.” Wow. I’m sure he could see I was heavy (it’s really sort of hard to hide!) but he noticed my smile and spoke a truth over me that I hadn’t remembered in a long time. That one word made me change my outlook and I found myself smiling at everyone I passed. God used him to remind me that I’m more than what I had labeled myself.
It’s important to remind ourselves daily of what God says about us, because He is Truth. Nothing He says will ever be a lie, nor will it ever conflict with Scripture. Hear His voice through the songs, Scripture, encouragement from a friend...He longs to fill your heart with Truths about just how beautiful you are.
Think of 5 family/friends you can encourage today with an uplifting word. Look for ways God is encouraging you today. You are worthy and you are His!
