{Spiritual 5}
Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." John 8:32
I couldn't help but think how this scripture applied to me and my childhood. Growing up, I learned very soon that my father was an alcoholic. Abusing alcohol was my father's way of dealing with core issues that he kept avoiding, to cover up his depression and brokenness for his past. As his daughter, it broke my heart to watch him over the years be so tormented and imprisoned with his own issues. I prayed for him to be set free, to experience true freedom that I knew with all of my heart was just one prayer away.
You see, if I hadn't of accepted the love of Jesus early in my life, I may have gone down the same road as my dad. In fact, I did. For a short season in my life, how I coped with the devastation of seeing my dad hurt himself was to also try to hurt myself. That is another blog in itself, but what I am expressing here is, it truly affected every part of my life, and the pattern of his self-destruction was quickly becoming more evident every are of my life. I was absolutely losing all control. So, I truly have have empathy for those who turn to drugs and alcohol to numb the pain and hurt from the past. I could have easily inherited my earthly fathers' pattern of destructive behavior as my own, but instead, I chose to surrender my life to my Heavenly Father. I wanted to be free from that generational sin that my dad was so unfortunately modeled for us as his children.
The definition of generational sin is this- "sinful patterns that are passed down from one generation to the next." As a parent, you have a position of authority to take back, disown, any sinful patterns that your parents modeled for you. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you any pattern of generational sin that may impact your family, your children. Intentionally disown each and every one of them and give thanks to the Lord for being a Holy God, who is gracious and forgiving, and has the power to break the bonds of generational sin.
The Lord came down to earth to reveal His great grace and truth to us. He promises in John, ' you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
. . . and set you free once and for all.
Question: What is the Lord saying to you in today's scripture? Think about that, meditate on that, and journal those thoughts down today.
Whatever you're going through, ask the Lord to help your unbelief and choose to trust Him with your every need. Surely, He will come and rescue you and set you free.
